5. Setting Up Your Surveys (Entry & Exit)

Learn how to set up Entry and Exit Surveys for your Natter Event, including the six question types available.

Written by Jonathan Jackson-Smyth

Your event has two surveys, both built the same way using the same question types:

  • The Entry Survey (Section 4) is answered by participants as they join, before conversations begin. It's ideal for capturing a starting point - baseline opinions, expectations, or background information.

  • The Exit Survey (Section 5) is answered by participants as they leave, once the event ends. It's a chance to capture shifts in perspective and invite reflection.

The real value comes from pairing them: asking comparable questions at both points lets you measure how perspectives changed over the course of the event. Use the Exit Survey for a mix of quantitative questions (NPS, slider, or choice) and free text to dig deeper into anything else you want to know.

This article covers how to add questions, the six question types, and saving your event.

Adding a Question

In either survey, click + Add Question to create a question. For each one you'll:

  1. Choose a question type (see below).

  2. Enter your question text.

  3. Optionally tick Mark this question as mandatory to require an answer before a participant can continue.

Use + Add Question again to add as many questions as you need.

Question Types

There are six question types, available in both the Entry and Exit Surveys:

Free Text

Participants type an open-ended response. Best for qualitative feedback and reflection where you don't want to constrain the answer.

Single Choice

Participants select one option from a list.

  • Enter your answer options (Answer 1, Answer 2, and so on).

  • Alternatively, tick Choose from Answers Library to select from a large pre-built drop-down list of ready-made options, rather than typing your own.

Multiple Choice

The same as Single Choice, but participants can select more than one option. You can type your own answers or use the Answers Library.

Ranking

Participants put a set of options into their preferred order.

  • Enter the options to be ranked.

  • Optionally toggle Randomise answer order so options appear in a different order for each participant, reducing bias toward whichever option happens to be listed first.

Net Promoter Score (NPS)

A standard NPS question, where participants respond on the familiar 0–10 scale. Just enter your question text.

Slider

Participants respond on a sliding scale.

  • Enter your question.

  • Optionally add Rating Labels to anchor each end of the scale - a label for 0 (e.g. "Not at all") and a label for 100 (e.g. "Completely"). These labels are optional and the score can be set between values of your choosing.

Marking Questions as Mandatory

Any question type can be set as required by ticking Mark this question as mandatory. Participants won't be able to proceed until a mandatory question is answered, so use this for anything essential to your insights and leave it unticked where you'd rather keep participation quick and optional.

Saving Your Event

Once your Exit Survey is complete, click Save Event to finish setup. This creates your event and generates its unique attendee link straight away.

A confirmation pop-up appears:
