A practice Natter lets you and your participants get familiar with the platform, test your technical setup, and iron out any issues before the real event. It's especially worthwhile for first-time hosts.

Why Run a Practice Natter?

  • Identify technical issues before the live Event.

  • Ensure participants are comfortable with the platform.

  • Confirm that audio, video, and browser settings are correctly configured.

  • Test conversation topics and Event flow to refine the experience.

Setting Up and Running a Practice Natter

1. Create a test event

Follow the normal event setup, but clearly label it as a "Practice Event" in the name and description. Use a small group (ideally 3-5 people) to keep testing manageable, and share the event link with them ahead of time. (See 1. Creating a Natter Event: Overview & Setup and 6. Finalising & Sharing Your Event.)

2. Run the Tech Check

Have everyone complete the Natter Tech Check before joining, to confirm browser compatibility and that microphone, speaker, and camera all work. Anyone with issues should resolve them before the real event. (See Run the Natter Tech Check.)

3. Simulate the real experience

Start the practice event and guide participants through the expected flow - entry survey, conversations, and exit survey - just as they'd experience it live. You can also trial different conversation durations to find the best fit.

4. Check audio and video quality

Make sure everyone's audio and video are working. Ask participants to use the same device and connection they'll use on the day, and to switch to a more stable connection if they hit lag or poor quality.

5. Gather feedback and adjust

Afterwards, ask participants how it went, review any technical or usability issues, and make sure your topics and structure are clear and engaging.

6. Confirm readiness

If everything ran smoothly, you're set for the live event. If any major issues came up, consider a second short practice.

Tips for a Successful Practice Event

  • Encourage first-time hosts to attend a practice Natter before joining the real session.

  • Record common issues & solutions to share with participants ahead of the live event.

  • Ensure all hosts & moderators are familiar with event controls and basic troubleshooting.
