2. Understanding Your Tech Check Results

Understand what your Natter Tech Check results mean, how to interpret browser, device, internet, and connectivity findings, and when further action may be required before joining a Natter session.

What Do My Results Mean?

The Natter Tech Check validates the readiness of your browser, device, internet connection, and network environment for a Natter session.

Most users will see one of the following result types:

Fully Supported

Your environment meets all tested requirements and is ready for Natter.

No further action is typically required.

Partially Supported

Your environment should still be able to join and participate in Natter sessions, however some optional features or connectivity methods may be unavailable.

Depending on the result, you may wish to review the recommendations provided by the Tech Check.

Not Supported

A critical requirement has not been met and further action is recommended before joining a Natter session.

Browser Results

The Browser Check validates whether your browser and operating system are compatible with Natter.

You may also see information about support for optional features such as:

  • Background Blur

  • AI Noise Suppression

A browser being marked as Partially Supported does not necessarily mean you will be unable to use Natter. In many cases, core functionality remains available while certain optional features may be unavailable.

For the best experience, ensure your browser and operating system are fully up to date.

Internet Speed Results

The Internet Speed Check measures several aspects of your connection:

Download Speed

The speed at which your device receives information from the internet.

Upload Speed

The speed at which your device sends information to the internet.

Ping

The time it takes for data to travel between your device and the internet.

Lower values indicate a more responsive connection.

Jitter

A measure of consistency within your network connection.

High levels of jitter can sometimes result in audio interruptions, video instability, or inconsistent call quality.

A result such as 'Your Connection Speed is Excellent' indicates that your internet connection is well suited for Natter sessions.

Microphone, Speaker & Camera Results

These checks verify that your devices are available and accessible to your browser.

Common issues identified during this stage include:

  • Browser permissions not granted

  • Incorrect device selection

  • Devices disconnected or unavailable

  • Cameras or microphones already in use by another application

If a device is not detected, first review your browser permissions and device settings before re-running the Tech Check.

Browser permissions are one of the most common causes of audio and video issues within Natter.

Streaming Results

The Tech Check evaluates multiple connection paths that can be used to establish audio and video connections.

You will see results for:

  • No Proxy

  • TCP Proxy

  • UDP Proxy

These indicate the available routes your network can use to establish and maintain media connections. Different organisations and network environments may support different connection methods.

Packet Loss

Packet Loss measures how much data is lost while travelling across the network.

High packet loss can result in:

  • Choppy audio

  • Frozen video

  • Delayed responses

  • Reduced call quality

Lower values are better.

Jitter

Jitter measures how consistent your network connection is over time.

Even with good internet speeds, high jitter can impact real-time conversations by causing:

  • Audio interruptions

  • Video instability

  • Inconsistent call quality

Lower values are better.

Bitrate

Bitrate measures how much audio and video data can be transmitted through your connection.

Higher bitrates generally allow for:

  • Better audio quality

  • Better video quality

  • More stable communication

Available bitrate may vary depending on network conditions and local restrictions.

These measurements help assess the quality and stability of the connection paths available between your device and Natter.

In most cases, users do not need to take action based on these values alone. The overall Connectivity result provides the best indication of readiness.

Connectivity Status

The final results screen includes an overall Connectivity assessment.

A result of Stable with a green check indicates that your environment successfully completed the connectivity tests and is considered ready for Natter.

A successful Tech Check provides strong confidence that your environment is ready for a Natter session.

However, it is important to remember that the Tech Check validates your environment at the time the test is run. Changes made afterwards, such as:

  • Connecting to a different network

  • Enabling or disabling a VPN

  • Changes to browser permissions

  • Security software or network policy changes

- may affect future sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

- Does a successful Tech Check guarantee I won't experience issues?

No.

A successful Tech Check provides strong confidence that your environment is ready for Natter, but it cannot guarantee that issues will never occur.

Changes to your network, browser, device, permissions, VPN configuration, or security tooling after the test is completed may impact a future session.

- Why did my Tech Check take a long time to complete?

The Tech Check should normally complete within a few minutes.

If testing takes significantly longer than expected, stalls, or fails to complete, this may indicate that elements of the test are being delayed or restricted by the local environment.

Examples may include:

  • Corporate firewalls

  • VPNs

  • Proxy servers

  • Security or traffic inspection tools

If the issue persists, try testing from another network or contact your IT team for assistance.

- Do I need to send my results to Natter?

No.

Once the Tech Check has been completed through to the final Results screen, the results are automatically submitted to Natter.

There is no need to manually send your results unless specifically requested by the Natter team.

- When Should I Seek Help?

Consider contacting your IT team or Natter Support if:

  • The Tech Check does not complete successfully

  • Device permissions cannot be enabled

  • Connectivity tests repeatedly fail

  • Results differ significantly between environments (for example, home versus office)

  • You are unsure how to interpret your results
