1. Run the Natter Tech Check

Learn how to run the Natter Tech Check and validate browser compatibility, device readiness, and network connectivity before participating in a Natter session.

What is the Natter Tech Check?

The Natter Tech Check is a browser-based readiness assessment designed to verify that your device, browser, audio/video equipment, and network environment are capable of supporting a successful Natter session.

The test takes approximately 2 minutes to complete and requires no software installation.

By running the Tech Check before your session, you can identify and resolve potential issues before joining a live Natter event.

Why We Recommend Running the Tech Check

The Tech Check helps identify potential issues before they impact a live Natter session.

Common issues that can be identified include:

  • Browser compatibility problems

  • Missing camera or microphone permissions

  • Unsupported devices or configurations

  • Network restrictions

  • Connectivity issues within managed corporate environments

Running the Tech Check in advance significantly reduces the likelihood of disruption during a live session and provides confidence that your environment is ready for Natter.

When Should I Run the Tech Check?

We recommend running the Tech Check:

  • Before your first Natter session

  • When joining Natter from a new device

  • When joining from a different location (for example, home vs office)

  • After changing browsers

  • After changing networks or VPN configurations

  • When requested by your organisation or the Natter team

  • When troubleshooting connectivity, audio, or video issues

Before You Begin

For the most accurate results:

  • Use the same device you intend to join Natter from

  • Use the same browser you intend to use during the session

  • Use the same internet connection you expect to use during the event

  • If you normally connect through a corporate VPN, ensure the VPN is connected before running the test

  • Close any unnecessary applications that may be using your microphone or camera

šŸ’” Tip: If you expect to join Natter from multiple environments (for example both home and office locations), we recommend running a Tech Check from each environment.

Step 1: Open the Tech Check

Navigate to:

You will be presented with the Natter Tech Check welcome screen.

Step 2: Enter Your Details

Enter:

  1. Your name

  2. Your email address

  3. Your current location

Location options may include:

  • Home

  • Office

  • Client Site

  • Other

This information helps provide context for your results and can assist troubleshooting if issues are identified.

Step 3: Browser Compatibility Check

The Tech Check verifies that your browser and operating system are compatible with Natter.

This includes validating browser capabilities required for real-time communication and identifying whether optional features such as Background Blur and AI Noise Suppression are supported in your current environment.

If any issues are detected, recommendations will be displayed to help optimise your setup.

Step 4: Internet Speed Check

The Internet Speed Check measures the quality of your internet connection and helps determine whether your current network can support a high-quality Natter experience.

During this stage, the Tech Check will measure:

  • Download Speed - How quickly your device can receive data from the internet

  • Upload Speed - How quickly your device can send data to the internet

  • Ping (Latency) - The time it takes for data to travel between your device and Natter’s infrastructure

  • Jitter - Variations in network latency that can impact the stability of real-time audio and video

Once complete, the Tech Check will provide an overall assessment of your connection quality.

A result of ā€œYour Connection Speed is Excellentā€ indicates that your network is well-suited for high-quality Natter sessions.

šŸ’” Tip: If your internet speed results are lower than expected, try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router, switching to a wired connection, or temporarily pausing other bandwidth-intensive applications.

Step 5: Microphone & Speaker Check

This check verifies that:

  • Your microphone is detected

  • Audio input is functioning correctly

  • Your selected speakers or headset are working

Speak into your microphone and confirm that activity is detected.

Use the 'Test Speaker' button to verify that audio can be heard correctly.

Click Next to continue.

Step 6: Camera Check

The Tech Check verifies that:

  • A camera is detected

  • Browser permissions have been granted

  • Video can be successfully captured

Ensure your camera preview is visible before continuing.

If your camera is unavailable, review your browser and operating system permissions before re-running the test.

Click Next to continue.

Step 7: Connectivity & Streaming Check

The Tech Check performs a series of network and streaming tests to verify that your environment can support Natter's real-time communication requirements for both Video & Audio.

This stage helps identify potential connectivity issues before they affect a live session.

Depending on your environment, additional security controls such as firewalls, VPNs, proxy servers, or network filtering may influence the results.

šŸ’” Tip: Select the drop down arrow (shown below) to review the available protocol and graphical data.

Click Next once testing has completed.

Step 8: Review Your Results

Once testing is complete, a summary of your results will be displayed.

This includes:

  • Browser compatibility

  • Internet Speed

  • Microphone status

  • Speaker status

  • Camera status

  • Connectivity results

  • Streaming readiness

If all checks pass successfully, your environment is ready for Natter.

Best Practices

For the most reliable results:

  • Run the Tech Check from the same location where you will attend your Natter session

  • If using a corporate VPN, run the test with the VPN enabled

  • Re-run the Tech Check if your environment changes

  • Save your results if engaging your IT or networking team

  • Complete the test before joining important Natter sessions
